  • I like that Danneels has a reputation as an intellecutal, a former professor of liturgy at the Catholic University of Louvain, and is said to have a reputation as a good listener and someone who builds consensus.

  • And someone will open up the Church to dialogue and free/open inquiry. John Paul did a great deal for the Church, but he was also an authoritarian centralizer, especially during his later years. The Church needs to confront its problems, especially in the West, not hide from them. After John Paul's long pontificate, it's time for a moderate consensus-builder to move the Church forward.

  • I think Danneels has basically concluded he will never be Pope and thus gone on the record with provocative comments that no one seeking the post would make.(He believes in a resignable papacy;I think that the post would be catastrophically damaged by not being held for life).

I think that Vatican II basically destroyed "consensus" within Catholicism and he's certainly not inclined to restore that lost consensus.A religion that tries to be all things to all people winds up being nothing (mind you,I consider the whole idea of Jesus being God Incarnate is nonsense anyway,so how this denomination calibrates it is a matter of detail to me).

  • And it looks like Danneels will never be pope. Which is too bad. I agree with you that religion cannot be all things to all people, which is why, to a certain extent, I don't mind Ratzinger's claim that Catholicism is superior to other Christian denominations and other religions. I hope that Ratzinger picks up John Paul's commitment to ecumenism, but, despite my admiration for Danneels and other reformers, I don't want the Church to become just another liberal institution upholding liberal values.
