Eagles, shmeagles

On a lighter note, it appears that Philadelphia Eagles QB Donovan McNabb and WR Terrell Owens have resolved their differences and are now getting along just splendidly.

Phew. I guess there's hope for world peace, after all.

(Not that I care. I'm a long-time Pittsburgh Steelers fan. But isn't the start of the NFL season a truly wonderful time of the year?)

  • Yes, I think I might. I agree that he's an atrocious role model, if a role model at all. Which begs the question: Do we even need our sports stars to be role models?

  • Well, frankly, while I think TO's behavior has been pretty bad, I don't entirely disagree with his views about the contract. The way the NFL is set up, only the players are obligated under the contracts--the owners can cut them anytime they want. So, when they sign someone to a gazillion dollar contract, it's sort of meaningless because they can essentially void the contract at any time and not have to pay the money. So the owners have almost all the leverage. It's pretty hypocritical for the NFL owners to talk about the sanctity of contract when they don't have similar obligations. I can't blame a player that has a real good year from saying, ok, now I have leverage, ante up.

As for him being a role model,I don't particularly like TO, but if you think he is the worst role model around, you haven't been paying attention. At least he hasn't been in jail as far as we know and he plays with courage and passion. And I think it's a bit condescending for middle class white guys to talk about who black kids should have as role models.
