Major escalation

By Creature

I've been trying to figure how to tackle the escalation of violence in the Middle East when suddenly it hit me -- let CNN do it.

Has Israel overreacted? [perhaps] Has the Bush administration been slow in responding? [yes] Has the war in Iraq only served to weaken the United States in dealing with all this? [yes] Is the Middle East on the verge of all out war? [perhaps] Have the Israelis thumbed their nose at Bush's call for moderation? [yes, but what's the back-room deal?] Will anger toward Israel put our troops at further risk? [I'll put money on it] Is the whole damn thing one big cluster fuck? [ __ ]

  • The Middle East may now be evidence of what happens when the world’s sole superpower abandons any semblance of detente. Read an analysis on how Dick Cheney sees the current U.S. foreign policy as the culmination of three decades of strategic efforts to position America as the sole occupant at the top of the power pyramid…here:

  • creature, I buy into the concept of 'the ME as a clusterfuck', no doubt about it. It's a region gone wild. I'm confident that on the Arab Street, there's a healthy 'live and let live' sentiment. But it's not reflected in many ME governments- certainly not in Iran, Syria or Palestine. I don't see much that the US can do about this. You can bet that chaos will reign in the foreseeable future- and that's not good for anyone. There's a temptation to blame the US for the chaos (Iraq hasn't helped). Realistically, however, a strong US diplomatic presence would be used to inflame and undermine. It's a no win situation for everyone.
