MONTREAL SHOOTING
As many of you may know by now, a gunman opened fire at Dawson College in Montreal yesterday, killing one and wounding twenty.

I wonder whether the Canadian consensus, if there is a consensus, will be that restrictive gun laws failed to prevent such a thing or whether it will be that Canada needs to make illegal things even more illegal. Banning things for the public good has been a US thing for a long time and hasn't done much in the way of eliminating the banned things, whether it's James Joyce novels, Hemp or handguns.
I sometimes think of Canadians as being, if not smarter, at least more sensible and less hysterical than their south of the border neighbors but we shall see.
Murder and mayhem, of course are already banned, but such things happen everywhere, anyway.

This is a real tragedy and we should extend our sympathies to those affected. We like to think of some places (schools, hospitals, chuches) and some individuals (children, students, educators, religious people, doctors, nurses) as sacrosanct. We like to think of these places as always trying to better the world in a way that media, politics, shopping, banks, etc. do not. We usually recognize that the people involved in these institutions are usually not interested in the "bottom line" as the highest end and usually will sacrifice all to promote benign if not beneficial services to all mankind. So, when someone violates these, it tramples on the very things that help separate us and ennoble us. There is a tacit understanding that these things are globally elevated and protected for this reason. I think we should take a moment here and pause for the tragedy. The media circus and voyeruism might make you want to shrug it off as sensationalized news -- to do so is a mistake. Never let oversaturation dictate whether or not you feel outrage, pain, grief, or helplessness.
