When withdrawal is framed as defeat

By Creature

With McCain's camp whining today about Barack Obama's desire to "lose" the Iraq war (this according to the very people that brought us this lost war to begin with), what I need from John McCain is a real definition of winning.

I get the whole head-held-high, honor crap (if honor is even possible after the mess we've created). What I don't get is why a phased, rational withdrawal (something all sides except Bush and McCain want) can't be defined as winning? Withdrawal has to happen eventually and if the Right would stop framing it as losing maybe we could call withdrawal a victory and get the hell out.

And, if it's only a matter of how high our troops heads are held on the way out, couldn't the commander-in-chief just order the troops to keep their chins up on the way out the door? Hell, throw in a few flags, do a jig, call it victory, and we're done. How hard would that be?

  • If the Iraqi government requests the USA and its allies to leave Iraq, and they do...then it is a victory for the USA and its allies.

The USA invaded Iraq and overthrew a murderous Baathist [orginally inspired by National Socialism and then by Communism] dictatorship allowing a democratic regime [as democratic as is possible in that part of the world] to rise and take 'charge'...the USA, and its allies, invaded to introduce democracy...if that democratic regime then asks them to leave and they leave...how could that be interpreted as a defeat?

  • Anything can be interpreted in any way - and will be - but if we are asked to leave it will be a defeat for those who really sought a permanent presence or worse. Those who want to build military bases, who have built the world's largest fortified "embassy" and those who want to own the oil: these people will not feel like they won.

Are yo one of those who still believes this was about removing a dictator? Really?

  • I forgot...it was "all about the oil"...in theory the USA will soon be flooding the world markets with its hoarded stolen loot causing oil prices to crash and reverse the US economic crisis just in time to get the Republican Presidential candidate elected ...cunning people those Yanks.
