Craziest Republican of the Day: Virginia Foxx

By Michael J.W. Stickings

(More crazy Republicans. More crazy conservatives.)

So you know how no House Republicans voted for the stimulus package yesterday? Well, it's not just that they're a bunch of ideological extremists who hate America, it's that, quite simply, some of them are insane. Take Virginia Foxx, for example -- or don't, it's probably better for your health -- who descended even more deeply than usual into the bowels of partisan delusion. From the NYT (via Scheiber at The Plank):

Representative Virginia Foxx, Republican of North Carolina, said that former President George Bush's signature tax cuts in 2001 had created years of growth but that the nation's problems started when Democrats regained majorities in Congress in the 2006 elections.

That's right, it's all the Democrats' fault. Everything was hunky-dory up until 2006, with the housing, banking, and manufacturing problems, among others, springing up ex nihilo only after Reid and Pelosi took over. (Scheiber: "So the Democrats came into office and a housing bubble retroactively inflated and began to pop? Mortgage-backed assets worth trillions less than their stated value just magically appeared on bank balance sheets and in hedge fund portfolios?)

Yes, my friends, Virginia Foxx is that crazy. (Assuming that she actually believes this -- but what is there to think that she does not?)

  • Unfortunately, Virginia Foxx is the representative from my district. Not that I didn't try to oust her, but this part of NC is really red so it's hard for a liberal, socialist like myself to make any inroads.
she did an ad saying how she wanted to hear from us, so I content myself bombarding her with emails about everything and demanding she perform acts I know she is totally against.
That's probably why she's getting crazier by the day. Although she wasn't wrapped too tight the first time she was elected.

  • What I really really cannot stand is that you cannot email other representatives or Senators that are not your own.

I think a person should be able to email any senator or representative even though they are not in a district.
If they can vote to govern and affect my life, they they should be able to hear from ME!!!

  • Actually, Diane, you can email government officials outside of your district. They just don't have any reason to pay attention to you - you didn't elect them.

When I've been deeply frustrated, I have been known to find an address from a town in their district, and lie about where I'm from. (Google "P O Box -name of town- -state-" and find a similar address. That usually works - if they don't want a street address, that's even better.) Somehow, I doubt that they take the time to check your name against the voter roles.

  • You just have to organize and keep trying to get these extremist Wing-Nuts out of office for the good of America.

  • Hey RockyNC, I'm in Ms. Foxxxx district, too. She claims to be our representative, although she mostly represents the republicans in our district and lots of businesses in the district and around the world. I'm not sure she's CRAZY, but she's as dumb as a stump. She a slum-landlady, ''''educator'''', die-hard repugnican and general ignorant of most of the real people in the district she claims to represent.

If you send an email accusing her of kowtowing to special interests to whom she is beholden, you might get a rise out of her chief of staff, but you'll never her directly from her because she thinks she's royalty and therefore insulated from the masses.

  • Rocknyc: I can't even imagine what it must be like to live in such a deeply red part of the state. When I was in the U.S. it was mostly in New Jersey and Massachusetts. Sure, I've been to red parts of the country -- notably, I have a lot of family in Alabama -- but I have only ever lived in what are for the most part solidly blue states. A good friend of mine recently moved to Oklahoma, and, through him, I've gotten a sense of what it's like. And, from what I can tell, it's not pretty.

It's good to hear from some of her actual constituents. And you're right, Bruce T. Maybe she's more dumb than crazy.
