And the rest, as they say, is history. A long, wonderful, glorious history. (If only the remaining three -- David, Roger, and Nick -- would get back together, if only briefly. Alas. But at least we had Live8.)
Here they are on that day -- Roger, Nick, Syd, and Richard in the pre-David days -- jumping for joy, 46 years ago today:

I read that when Pink Floyd was recording their debut album at EMI/Abbey Road studios in 1967, The Beatles were just down the hallway, recording the "Pepper" album. Quite a lot of creative genius activity going on, under one roof.

Yes, that's true. And how amazing to have been there. Of course, no one knew what would become of this weird psychedelic band.
