Wait, Sarah Palin was a governor?

By Michael J.W. Stickings

How's this for an unintentionally amusing headline?

The piece starts:

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) will speak at next month’s Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).

"We are pleased to again welcome Governor Sarah Palin to CPAC in March," American Conservative Union (ACU) Chairman Al Cardenas said in a statement. "Governor Palin electrified the crowd in 2012 and we are thrilled to welcome her back this year."

I suppose it makes sense to refer to Palin as "Governor Palin" (or "Former Gov. Palin) rather than, say, "Ex-Fox News Pundit Palin" or "Ex-Reality TV Star Palin, or even "Former Vice Presidential Candidate Palin," but it's odd to see her two and a half years as Alaska governor highlighted like this.

After all, she was mayor of Wasilla for much longer, six years, and before that she was on the Wasilla City Council for four.

And she's known much more for being such a disaster in 2008, for her time at Fox News, and for her self-aggrandizing nonsense on Facebook.

But if conservatives are "thrilled," well, there you go. I guess it doesn't matter what you call her.

  • Convention is to give someone whatever their highest status is. In Palin's case, that probably is governor, but certainly that is not why she is a star. I would tend to say vice presidential candidate. If we were to be honest, we would call her a reality star. Thinking back to 2008, I remember mostly the soap opera that was her life. Since then, it has not changed. Even on Fox News, she wasn't an analyst so much as a geek sideshow. She was brought on the same way Dennis Miller is brought on.

Regardless of all that, if I were a Republican, I would be embarrassed. And a lot of Republicans are. But the base of the party can't seem to get enough of, "I sure love that Constitution, you betcha!"

Do liberals have anyone like her? I can't think of anyone. Palin makes Rosanne look like a Rhodes Scholar. And Rosanne is not embraced by the Democratic Party. I think there probably isn't any equivalent. Liberals are not big on slogans and that's all Palin and that whole group offer.
